  • Stephanie Linus visits the US Capitol to Advocate for Improved Global Health for Women & Girls

On Thursday March 30, Stephanie Linus acclaimed actress, filmmaker, and women and girls advocate was the featured speaker at a briefing at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The event, which was sponsored by Pathfinder International, Catalyst Global Strategies, What to Expect Project, UN Women, UNFPA, and Stephanie’s nonprofit organization, Extended Hands Foundation, highlighted how U.S. government- supported global health programs improve the lives of women and girls in the developing world in ways that extend beyond improving health outcomes.

As a UNFPA Regional Ambassador and founder of Extended Hands Foundation, Stephanie discussed her work with several gender-based awareness and intervention projects across the world.

Stephanie led a discussion on how lack of health care access and overlapping areas of inequity keep girls out of school, limit educational opportunities, and keep them from living the lives they choose.

The briefing also included remarks by Lydia Murithi, Senior Global Technical and Strategy Advisor, Pathfinder International; Crystal Lander, Chief Strategic Engagement Officer, Pathfinder International; Annie Toro, President and CEO, What to Expect Project and Sarah Craven, Chief, Washington Office, UNFPA. The event was coordinated by Algene Sajery, CEO of Catalyst Global Strategies.

The training course came to a climax on Friday 15th August 2014 with a well-organised Award Ceremony. The event took place at the Muson Center, Onikan, Lagos and attracted the crème de la crème from various industries who all shared a common passion for growth of Nigeria’s creative sector.

  • Phenomenal You!

If you are phenomenal, say “Yay!”

We may have lost Maya Angelou, but her legacy stay with us.

I am relishing one of her best works this morning and I thought to share.

You may have read it before; it’s always good to read such powerful words every now and again…

    Phenomenal woman, that’s me!

    Enjoy!

    Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.

I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size

But when I start to tell them,

     They think I’m telling lies.

     I say,

It’s in the reach of my arms,

     The span of my hips,

     The stride of my step,

     The curl of my lips.

     I’m a woman

     Phenomenally.

     Phenomenal woman,

     That’s me.

     I walk into a room

Just as cool as you please,

     And to a man,

     The fellows stand or

     Fall down on their knees.

     Then they swarm around me,

     A hive of honey bees.

     I say,

It’s the fire in my eyes,

And the flash of my teeth,

     The swing in my waist,

And the joy in my feet.

     I’m a woman

     Phenomenally.

     Phenomenal woman,

     That’s me.

     Men themselves have wondered

     What they see in me.

     They try so much

     But they can’t touch

     My inner mystery.

When I try to show them,

They say they still can’t see.

     I say,

It’s in the arch of my back,

     The sun of my smile,

     The ride of my breasts,

     The grace of my style.

     I’m a woman

     Phenomenally.

     Phenomenal woman,

     That’s me.

     Now you understand

Just why my head’s not bowed.

I don’t shout or jump about

Or have to talk real loud.

     When you see me passing,

It ought to make you proud.

     I say,

It’s in the click of my heels,

     The bend of my hair,

     The palm of my hand,

     The need for my care.

     ‘Cause I’m a woman

     Phenomenally.

     Phenomenal woman,

     That’s me.

    —Maya Angelou

  • It’s Father’s Day!

To anyone taking care of a child(ren).

    Paying tuition fees

    Building a young one’s self-esteem

Teaching them life’s lessons through personal examples and great books

    Praying with them

Cheering them on as they try to create their own path in life

    Giving the necessary discipline

A nice hug and a kind word

Being the figure of authority in a child’s life

Protecting and providing regardless of any unfavourable circumstances

    You are a father.

And God is proud of you!

    Happy Father’s Day!

  • Kefee is gone!

    Oh Death!

Kefee is gone. Oh death, why?

We lament because she was so young, so full of life.

She had her whole life ahead of her…

Dreams to accomplish, love to savour…

Her music was beautiful, inspiring, sweet to hear

    She is gone now.

    Death, why oh why?

There are just never enough words to express how cheerless this makes me feel

She will be missed- by Nigerians and her fans, family and friends.

    Rest in Peace, dear one.
