  • #DidYouKnow: The Difference Between Best Before & Expiry Date

Whenever you buy a packaged food item, it’s always advisable to note the date which the manufacturer/producer recommends it suitable for consumption.

On some food items, you might see an “Expiry Date” and on some others, you might see a “Best Before Date“. These dates are very important to note. But what we are discussing today is the difference. Do you really know the difference between these two dates?

I did some online search and came up with these definitions:

Best before date: Length of time which an item is suitable for sale. It is the recommended time which a product will remain good. This date is more of a guideline and it gives the recommended date by which the product is best consumed by. This is the date up to and including which the food can be expected to remain at peak quality if properly stored. Food may be edible after this date; however its quality may suffer, e.g. potato crisps might become soft.

Expiry date: Indicates that the product is no longer safe to consume after the specified date.

    What’s the difference?

If food must not be consumed after a certain date for health and safety reasons, the ‘Expiration date’ mark must be used. Foods labeled ‘Expiration date’ cannot be sold after the date has expired. A ‘Best Before’ date would be used for shelf stable foods, dry goods such as biscuits and confectionery, frozen foods, most raw foods that will be cooked before being eaten (eg. meat, chicken, fish) or foods that will noticeably spoil before becoming a safety issue.

In some countries, food marked with a ‘Best Before’ date can still be sold after that date provided it is safe and suitable for consumption. Any storage conditions that are necessary to ensure that a food will retain its specific qualities for the period indicated by the date mark, must be declared on the label.

    I hope this clarifies.

If you were to make a choice, would you prefer the use of ‘Expiry Date’ over ‘Best Before’ date to avoid any mistakes?

  • Diet Vs. Exercise: What Is Better For Losing Weight?

It’s a new year and you’ve set for yourself a health goal – to lose weight. The question now is – what’s the best way to achieve this?

While diet and exercise are both important for long term weight goals, its important to know which one is best for you.

Yes, you can lose weight with diet alone, but exercise is also important. Without it, only a portion of your weight loss is from fat – you’re also stripping away muscle and bone density. Losing weight through exercise means you’re burning mostly fat. On the other hand, its much easier to cut 500 calories than to spend an hour in the gym burning 500 calories every day.

Due to our very busy schedules, most people find it very difficult to find time to jog or go to the gym regularly. Also, avoiding those foods with high calories can be very difficult.

However, both diet and exercise are essential for good health and for keeping that weight off.

So tell me, which option would you choose for weight loss. Dieting or exercising, and why?

  • 5 Tips For Keeping Your New Year Resolutions

Hi SL Fabz, welcome once again to 2015!

If your New Year’s resolutions from last year have gone unresolved, you’re not alone. Many of us had great aspirations at the beginning of last year and soon forgot about them as the months ran by.

The simplest explanation for this is that our highest aspirations for ourselves often conflict with our daily desires. Many times, we have long term goals but don’t break it up into daily tasks to achieve each day on the journey to our goals.

This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. Here are 5 tips to help you get started:

    Be Realistic
The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.

    Keep The List Short
It’s probably best to make two or three resolutions that you intend to keep. That way, you’re focusing your efforts on the goals you truly want. By setting only a few goals it helps us maintain focus and increases the chances of getting them done.

    Write Them Down
Research has shown time, and time again, there is a huge percentage difference when one takes the time to put pen to paper, and write them down.

    Make A Plan
Rather than stating one enormous goal, create a series of smaller steps to reach it. Have you ever heard the quote “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” Don’t let your goals be wishes. By actually planning and setting time lines your wishes just might come true.

    Track Your Progress
Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 10 kgs, focus on losing the first two. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for each two kgs lost.

    Happy 2015!

  • Happy New Year!!!

The excitement of a new year brings about an anticipation of a better future. This is one real moment that will touch the fabrics of human emotions that entails not only hope, but a reason to keep smiling and living life as it is.

Take a leap of faith and begin this wondrous new year by believing. Believe in yourself. And believe that there is a loving Source – a Sower of Dreams – just waiting to be asked to help you make your dreams come true.

    Welcome to 2015!!!

  • May The Souls Of AirAsia Plane’s Casualties Rest In Peace

I was really hoping it would not get to this, but sadly it has. What a sad way to end the year for many families.

Earlier today, I heard the sad news that some parts of the missing Air Asia plane along with about 40 bodies had been recovered from the sea. Indonesian officials also believe that there are no survivors of the unfortunate incident.

This is so devastating. May God grant the loved ones of the plane’s occupants the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. And may the souls of the departed Rest In Peace…. Amen

  • Wishes For The Year Ahead

May God make the coming year a happy one!
Not by shielding you from all sorrows and pain,
    But by strengthening you to bear it, as it comes;
Not by making your path easy,
    But by making you sturdy to travel any path;
Not by taking hardships from you,
    But by taking fear from your heart;
Not by granting you unbroken sunshine,
    But by keeping your face bright, even in the shadows;
Not by making your life always pleasant,
But by showing you when people and their causes need you most,
and by making you anxious to be there to help.
God’s love, peace, hope and joy to you for the year ahead.

    I love you all!

  • My Prayers Are With The Families Of Those Aboard Missing AirAsia Flight

It’s just a few days to the end of the year and while we’ve all been anticipating crossing into the new year, sadly, the world has been devastated by the news of a missing plane.

News reports have it that an AirAsia Indonesia airplane flying from Indonesia to Singapore with 162 people on board has gone missing. The jet carrying 162 people had 138 adults, 16 children and one infant.

According to CNN, the missing plane, flying from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore, went missing as it flew over the Java Sea between the islands of Belitung and Borneo yesterday. Midway into the flight of more than two hours from the city of Surabaya, the plane got missing. No distress call was made before the disappearance.

The two countries immediately launched a search and rescue operation, but there was unfortunately no sign of the plane more than seven hours after it lost contact with ground control.

We still haven’t recovered from the shock of the missing Air Malaysia plane and now this. This is a very sad shock to the families and friends of those on board and indeed, the entire world.

At this point in time, words fail me. How do you comfort someone who doesn’t know if his or her loved ones are alive or dead? This is just too sad. My consolation is in the fact that I know there is a God who sees all and who is always in control. My prayers are with them in this obviously difficult time.

Why don’t you drop some words of comfort to them in the comment section below.

  • Even When Christmas Is Over, The Light Of The World Is Still Here

There are several songs written about Christmas day, but not many about the day after Christmas. So today, I went searching for something to inspire me about the ‘Day After Christmas’ and came upon this song by Matthew West.

I was really touched by these lines:

Even when Christmas is over, the Light of the world is still here.
Take down the lights and the star and the tree
But don’t let this world take your joy after Christmas
Take joy to the world and just sing

The hype abut Christmas Day may be over, but let’s not forget the reason for the season, Jesus Christ, who is here for eternity. Here are the full lyrics of the song. I hope it inspires you:

    “Day After Christmas”

Here comes the letdown Christmas is over
Here comes the meltdown, there goes the cheer
But before we have a breakdown, let us remember
The light of the world is still here

    Happy day after Christmas
And merry rest of the year
    Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
    The light of the world

Come January I’m ready for summer
The Super Bowl’s over and I’ll settle for spring
Sometimes we all need a change in the weather
But it won’t change the reason we sing

    Happy day after Christmas
And merry rest of the year
    Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
    The light of the world
    The light of the world
    The light of the world

So take down the stockings, take back the sweaters
Take down the lights and the star and the tree
But don’t let this world take your joy after Christmas
Take joy to the world and just sing

    Happy day after Christmas
And merry rest of the year
    Even when Christmas is over
The light of the world is still here
