DRY Is Now Showing In Cinemas Nationwide! See Movie Show Times

I’m so excited to share this news today!!! My movie ‘DRY‘ is now available in cinemas nationwide.

Making my film DRY has been a long burden placed in my heart by God! Like I always tell my Crew – this is God’s project… He gave me this burden … I have done my part and now it time for Him to finish it. We want this film to be impactful and be a catalyst for change – to change minds, laws and stereotypes or cultural practices that prevent us from moving forward as a nation.

And today, after hosting successful premieres in the UK, Lagos and Abuja, it is now open for everyone to go and watch in the cinemas.

So please go out and support this film because by watching and discussing about it, you are also contributing to helping the plights of these women who are voiceless.

All The Exciting Photos from the DRY Movie Premiere in Lagos

I looked forward to the DRY Movie Premiere in Lagos for a long time, and I’m glad the day finally came and we had a very successful event.

On Sunday 2nd August 2015, movie industry enthusiasts, key stake holders and lots of guests gathered at the Silverbird Cinema in Victoria Island Lagos for the ‘DRY’ Movie Premiere.

The critically acclaimed movie had been long awaited by many who were excited to see the movie and gave it excellent reviews after watching it.

Written, produced and directed by my humble self, DRY is an inspired true story that follows a trail of Zara’s (played by me) trip to Africa, her constant turmoil as a result of inexplicable horrors from her child hood, her experiences and heartaches while working with young girls suffering from complications from early child birth as child brides, against the backdrop of a rich African culture. It is full of intrigue, suspense, unbelievable surprises, the joy of reconciliation and the power of the human spirit that is guaranteed to captivate and engage moviegoers.

I’m very grateful to everyone who turned up to give their support. You are all loved and appreciated and I thank you so much for coming. A big thank you goes to my husband Linus Idahosa, Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Sola Sobowale, Mo Abudu, Ruth Osime, Nkiru Anumudu, Tara Fela-Durotoye, Ray Kyles – British Deputy High Commissioner, Representatives from the Canadian Embassy, Representatives from the US Consulate amongst others.

The film stars: Darwin Shaw as Dr. Alex, the legendary Liz Benson Ameye as the Matron, Bill McNamara as Dr. Brown, and Introducing Zubaida Ibrahim Fagge as Halima the teenager who had to endure a life not designed for a child: to be married to a man who was more than four times her age. Produced by Next Page Productions, this film was supported by the Office of the special adviser to the president on MDGs Nigeria, Aberystwyth University Wales, Diamond Bank, Ford Foundation, Project Act Nollywood, USAID Acquired Fistula Project, Vlisco and more.

DRY will be available in Silverbird Cinemas nationwide from Friday 14th August 2015. Don’t miss it!

10 Gripping Photos From DRY That Will Make You Yearn For The Movie

The common saying goes thus: ‘Pictures say a thousand words’. Movies, well, more than a thousand.

As we count down to the nationwide premiere of DRY in cinemas across Nigeria on August 14th, I’d like to whet your appetites with some captivating photos from the movie set that will make you really eager to see the movie.

Here are some photos that tell more about DRY:

If you’ve watched the trailer, you must be familiar with this scene. Something important was going on here with lots of people running away from a fire.

The moment where the very reluctant bride was given away in marriage.

The rain came as a blessing to us when we were filming this scene. After going through so much, the teen bride was rejected and sent packing. Her tears in this scene will move you to tears of your own.

Halima, being laughed upon and disgraced by other kids in the community. As if she hadn’t been through so much already. So touching…

Facing the reality: Liz Benson Ameye who plays the role of a nurse explains the dire conditions of women with VVF in the community.

DRY had a bunch of talented actors, I assure you. This picture speaks so much.

Shooting in the market place is not a small task, I tell you! That’s me enjoying my role as a Director after speaking to the crowd of onlookers at the scene.

This scene was shot in Wales. The discussion going on here formed an important part of the story. I’m not gonna tell you much about this. Go watch it at the cinemas anytime from August 14th!

Two talented actors Klint da Drunk and Tamara Eteimo brought life to the hospital scenes in DRY.

DRY is about advocacy and policy changes, and to depict this properly, we literally took our campaign at the National Assembly.

I’m sure you can’t wait to see movie. Not to worry, it’s just two weeks to August 14th!

DRY: Behind the scenes

Many people have asked me why I wrote, directed and produced DRY. To me, DRY is more than just a movie. It’s a calling, a project I had to embark upon because God pointed me in that direction.

This video below will shed more light on that.

I’m very grateful to everyone who sponsored, advised, and put in time and effort to making this project a success. From Friday 14th August, DRY will be showing in Nigerian cinemas nationwide and I can’t wait for you to watch it.

DRY Will Be Showing In Nigerian Cinemas Nationwide from August 14th!

After a successful screening debut in Wales, UK, the critically acclaimed movie ‘DRY’ will premiere nationwide in Nigeria beginning August 14th, 2015.

I hope you’ve had a lovely week.

I know the official announcement has not yet been made, but I love to share things here with you my faithful readers first and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Finally, DRY is going to be showing in cinemas across Nigeria and you’ll get a chance to see my latest work! I’m so excited!! From Friday 14th August, DRY will be showing at Silverbird Cinemas across Nigeria. So if you live in any of these cities: Lagos, Abuja, Portharcourt, Ilorin, AkwaIbom and Kano – you can watch the movie at the cinemas very soon.

But before the nationwide release, Next Page Productions will be hosting a movie premiere in Lagos to launch it to the general public and I’d love to see you there! Yes, YOU!

It’s The Day of the African Child

In the past 25 years, June 16 every year is celebrated as the Day of the African Child in memory of hundreds of innocent South African children who were massacred on the 16th of June 1976 by the then South African police.

Every year, we celebrate this day with different themes based on issues that concern children. The theme of this year’s celebration is very dear to me: Accelerating our collective effort to end child marriage in Africa. It’s one of the issues my movie ‘DRY‘ addresses, and something I have been very passionate about for many years.

Child marriage is defined as a marital union with a person under the age of 18years. Child marriage is a fundamental violation of human right, it leads to life time disadvantage and deprivation. Many girls are married off by their parents without their free and full consent. Most times they are married off to men old enough to be their fathers or grand fathers as 3rd or 4th wives.

Child marriage is condemned because the child is still growing and parts of her body and reproductive organs especially are not fully developed. The child is not psychologically matured to run a home; it denies the child the right to basic and qualitative education, deny them the opportunity to gain vocational and life skills , the child is exposed to health risk due to early pregnancy, child bearing and motherhood. It marks an abrupt transition into sexual relations without consent which is rape, sexual violence and abuse.

The child remains timid due to age difference, not able to make choices, develops low self esteem, self worth and low self confidence. Child marriage is a complex issue that is driven by a lot of factors in different society. It has a devastating and long term effect on the health, education, psychological, emotional mental physical development and future of the girl child.

Irrespective of the laws condemning child marriage as violation of the rights of the girl child, it is still practiced in our country. The Child Right Act of 2003 sets the national legal minimum age of marriage at 18years some states are yet to adhere.

Report has it that 43% of girls in Nigeria are married off before their 18th birthday, 17% are married off before they turn 15. The prevalence of child marriage varies widely from one zone to the other, with figures as high as 76% in the North West zone.(UNFPA 2012,UNICEF SWCR 2013 )

You’d be surprised to note that in Lagos state where people of all Nigerian tribes reside, child marriage is still being practiced in some local governments and communities. Action is needed to prevent thousands of girls from being married out before age of 18.

On this day of the African child, I urge us all to contribute our quota in stopping this act for good. Its our collective responsibility.

My Movie ‘DRY’ wins Best Protagonist Award at the Bentonville Film Festival, USA!

Hi SL Fabz!

I’m so excited to tell you that my new film “DRY” won an award at the Geena Davis and ARC Entertainment’s inaugural Bentonville Film Festival (BFF) in Arkansas, U.S. for “Best Protagonist”. Yay!!!

This came as a complete surprise. I am excited and honored that the Bentonville Film Festival picked my film for a screening, let alone an award. I am looking forward to this film touching the hearts of many more and helping people take action to save the child bride.

I am also hopeful that there will be more awards to come.

The Bentonville Film Festival (BFF) is founded by Academy Award Winner Geena Davis and Trevor Drinkwater, was a star-studded event. Here’s Geena Davis at the event.

I couldn’t get to attend, but glady, the film’s co-producer/editor Jane Lawalata picked up the award.

What I Caught On TV: SELMA, Martin Luther King’s Biopic

Ever since I heard that a powerful film was being made about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, I’ve been eagerly anticipating its release. I was even more eager when I heard a Nigerian David Oyelowo was playing the role of Dr. King.

Now, I’m glad I’d finally get a chance to see it soon as I hear it has been released in cinemas.

In 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. campaigned for equal voting rights, culminating in marches from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama, which ultimately led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now, the story of the civil rights marches that changed America is being told in a powerful new film produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt, starring David Oyelowo as Dr. King.

As a movie director and actress, I am very much aware of the how an audio-visual production with a deep message such as this can inspire change. This is one of the reasons why I focused so much energy on my movie ‘DRY’ which highlights the challenges faced by child brides and the devastating effects of Vesico Vaginal Fistula. DRY would also soon be premiered in Nigeria 🙂

Selma a story of how one dream can change the world and I can’t wait to see it.

#MeetTheDRYStars: Liz Benson-Ameye & Rekiya Atta

I was privileged to have some seasoned actors with me for the production of DRY and I do not take this for granted in anyway. They brought their wealth of experience and skills to the set of the movie and made it such a pleasant experience.

It was a honour to work with two amazing women – Liz Benson-Ameye and Rekiya Atta.

Liz Benson-Ameye needs no introduction. Her journey to stardom began when she appeared on the set of the popular television soap opera, Fortunes in 1993 and since then, she has been a darling of the screen. She played the role of Matron in the movie, a woman who had so much passion for helping other women suffering from VVF. You could see her passion shine through the screen and watching her made me realize it wasn’t just acting, she is truly a good spirited woman.

You might not know Rekiaya Atta if you are only used to the ‘new Nollywood’, but she is one woman who was a great source of inspiration to my acting career. She was one of the early Nollywood actors bringing fond memories of films like Across The Niger, Battle of Love, Keeping Faith, Laraba, and Amina plus soap operas like, Behind the Clouds and Ripples. She aslo worked on the formative kiddies NTA television drama entitled ‘Tales by Moonlight’, I’m sure most of you would remember that.

Rekiaya played the role of Sani’s mother in the movie. Unlike Liz who was compassionate towards Halima who had VVF, she did the opposite and was harsh towards her. She is someone you’d definitely love to see in the movie so get ready to watch her on the big screen DRY premieres around you soon. You’d really love her professionalism.
