  • Episode 5: NA ME MARRY PASS #HeyWomanSeries

What would you do if you had a wife who physically, verbally, and emotionally abuses you? What would do you if you feel humiliated by a controlling and abusive female partner? Is this an ideal situation? Should our society regard this as the norm?

Women aren’t the only victims of domestic violence. Men are abused by their partners a lot more often than you may think. Along with fearing they wouldn’t be believed or would be seen as weak, men often stay in abusive relationships because they feel committed to or concerned about their partners. But this should not be the norm. Abuse is about power and control, and regardless of whether the victim is a man or a woman, it is never OK.

In this episode of #HeyWomanSeries, we turn the spotlight on the men. Gender stereotypes dictate that men are in a position of power and so it is automatically assumed that only women are victims of domestic violence. Everyone – no matter their gender – deserves help.

  • Episode 4: The Engagement #HeyWomanSeries

A young lady is faced with a difficult decision when she becomes a victim of violent abuse from the man she is engaged to. Will she go ahead with the wedding or will she call off the engagement?

Sexual and gender-based violence is an all-too common and devastating challenge among young people. It’s prevalence is often tied to pervasive norms and dynamics that reinforce such abuse, and encourages women to remain in abusive relationships.

In this episode of the #HeyWomanSeries, we see the brave act of a young lady who was not afraid to call it quits with a man she was engaged to. Violent behaviors in a relationship, most times, only get amplified in a marriage. It is my sincere hope that this video inspires us to make those tough, but important decisions that could literally be the difference between life and death. Let us prioritize our lives and safety over societal expectations.

  • Episode 3: Good Police #HeyWomanSeries

Linda, a victim of gender-based violence, is distraught when friends discourage her from reporting her husband to the Police. But she does anyway, and the support she finds is both shocking and welcoming.

A victim of sexual or gender-based violence has the right to be reasonably protected from the accused offender. One of the best resources for this help is the law enforcement agencies created to protect us. The Police can help if you become a victim of crime, including rape or sexual assault.

Our goal with the #HeyWomanSeries is to tell the stories from different perspectives. Law enforcement is responsible for taking reports of an assault and conducting an investigation when a crime has occurred. If you or someone you know has been a victim of gender or sexual violence, don’t be discouraged from seeking justice. Help is available.

  • Episode 2: Bad Police #HeyWomanSeries

A teenage victim of sexual violence goes to the police to seek justice, but her journey takes a different twist when she meets a group of police officers who make her feel like the offender rather than the victim.

Victims of sexual violence are often let down by the criminal justice system. The first of many obstacles most of them face is reporting the sexual assault to the police. This video captures the experiences of some victims whose attempts to report their cases were not treated with empathy, professionalism, and discretion.

Sexual assault is notoriously underreported in Nigeria and there is an urgent need to discuss and rectify these issues. It is my hope that this message gets the attention of the right authorities and that we all make adjustments where necessary to create a safer society.

  • Episode 1: The Student #HeyWomanSeries

The prevalence of sexual harassment of female students in tertiary institutions is worrisome. Many students are threatened with exam failure or other disturbing consequences if they refuse to succumb. In this short film, we attempt to capture a scenario of how a young girl was able to get out of the trap of harassment.

Sexual harassment thrives when perpetrators are able to subject their victims into silence. I would like to say to every young girl who might be experiencing this in one form or the other – you have a voice, and it is time to use it!

In the first episode of the #HeyWomanSeries, we attempt to draw attention to this problem. Watch the short film and let’s have a conversation about your thoughts in the comment section.

  • #HeyWomanSeries – What happens when we speak out or keep silent…

Sexual and gender-based violence has multiple expressions. While girls and women are more likely to fall victim, men experience it too. Some victims seek help and survive the abuse, but many are not so lucky. It can impact anyone regardless of their geographical location, socio-economic background, race, religion, sexuality, or gender identity.

I was inspired to create the #HeyWomanSeries to tell the stories from different perspectives. As a filmmaker, I’ve always believed the transformative power of multimedia to inform and inspire and I hope these short films do just that.

Every video showcases different outcomes people often have when they speak out or remain silent in the face of sexual and gender-based violence. It is my hope that as we examine these different, we find roles we can all play in curbing this scourge.

As part of the activities for the 2021 Women’s Month, the Pan African Film & Arts Festival is currently streaming Hey Woman.

I’m extremely grateful for the awesome feedback and attention this monologue has received since its lunch.

Supported by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Nigeria), Hey Woman is a captivating monologue which creatively addresses the various distressing thoughts that cripple a woman’s mind in the face of abuse and oppression. It is an anthem of encouragement and unity among women and men.
