  • This Song Gave Me Goosebumps

I just discovered another lovely Acapella group!

Their name is Bassless and their cover of this popular classic song – Have I Told You Lately That I Love You just gave me goosebumps.

Their harmonies are amazing and their voices blend perfectly.

It’s a beautiful Sunday and I promise you, your day will be even more beautiful after watching this video. Check it out:

  • Ladies, How Would You Like This? A Marriage Proposal & Wedding On The Same Day!

I know most single ladies dream of an amazing marriage proposal and an even more amazing wedding. But having both of them on the same day! Well, I don’t know about that. However, I must say it takes a really romantic man to plan his proposal and wedding without the knowledge of his bride-to-be and pull it off well.

Ryan Leak secretly planned his girlfriend Amanda Roman’s dream wedding for over a year before he proposed. Amanda had been putting up photos of her “Dream Wedding” on her Pinterest board and he used those photos as inspiration for the wedding planning.
    Amanda Leak

Over a hundred of their family and friends were already there secretly waiting right there at the hotel where he proposed to her and she had no idea!

You might ask why he did all that. Well, Amanda had casually told a friend she fantasized about getting engaged and married on the same day. Then boyfriend Ryan overheard the conversation and made her dream come true by secretly planning their wedding.

Now, isn’t that so romantic! I heard their wedding took place since 2013 but I just got to read about it and it’s still just too cute.

  • 10 Annoying Things Nigerians Do In Cinemas

This article was written by Mayo Bayo

During my short stay in Nigeria, on my bucket list was to catch up with the latest movies at the cinema. The movie ‘Half Of The Yellow Sun‘ was the first I wanted to watch as I had already read the novel so I was keen to see the movie. I bought my ticket at the Film House Cinemas in Surulere. A movie was 1500 Naira, a quite reasonable price, comparing with the price in other parts of the world.

Watching movies at the cinema for Nigerians is still not a culture but a thing people see as some sort of luxury; just like how a lot of people come specially to take picture at ShopRite supermarket instead of shopping (that’s a gist for another day).

So you find a lot of disgusting behaviors around, well not all is peculiar to Nigerian cinemas though. I went to 3 different cinemas during my stay and each had these 10 categories of people:

    The Commentator
As Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played the role of Odenigbo was looking into the Olanna’s eye, a romantic scene was building up already… next thing was this loud guy in the middle row of the cinema hall shouting,
Correct guy! I dey feel you joo!. Kiss am, you too dey form jare! You just dey dull”. At this moment I felt like punching this dude right on his balls. His loud outburst just kept interrupting my favorite scenes. To himself he was whispering, to me he was just another loud jerk. Like why now, this is not a football match we don’t need your commentary!

    Loud Chewer
Popcorn and movies go hand in hand, I can’t say the origin. It’s a tradition everywhere in the world but do you have to chew out loud like a Sokotogudali cattle. I have seen your popcorn, do I have to hear it too?

    The Leg Stretcher
I was still wondering where the smell was coming from, only to see some dude with his leg close to my nose killing it softly with his stinky socks. You have legs, the length of Zamfara’s sugar cane, why not just position them to your row and not stretch them towards my seat?

    He who laughs last …
Laughs best they say, but that was not the case for this guy that sat on the row before mine. 60secs after the scene this dude is still HAHA-ing! Ok that scene was funny, yes and we all laughed so can you now shut up so that we can hear what’s coming next?

    The Questioner
Chairman please what did he just say that was funny?” I was like what the hell, did I pay to come narrate movies, or what are your satellite dish ears made for? Ok I didn’t say that, else I would have been writing this post from a hospital bed. You need to see the guy’s biceps.

    The Crying baby
I was smiling at the large screen and sipping my Pepsi … and all of a sudden this baby starts bawling its lungs out, I cringed at the noise. Why do some mothers bring their baby to the cinema? Why not just sit in your house and enjoy a DVD movie with your family? Stop torturing the poor kid with high Dolby surround sound from those gigantic speakers.

    Armrest Mafia
You remember the questioner I told you about at the earlier? Yes the one with biceps the size of two big gwari yam tubers tied together. His biceps were spread all over the arm rest like a mat. I couldn’t even find space to put my broom stick looking arms.

    The Caller
Wale how far, I dey Ozone, I dey watch movie I go call you later”. Despite the switch off your phone during movie warning, this dude kept picking calls in the middle of the movie. When will some Nigerians learn to turn their phone off during a movie or put it on vibration?

    The chatty couple
They were talking like they were in their bed room. And for whatever reason this Romeo and Juliet sat right next to me as if the theatre was running out of seats – save the chat for after the movie.

    Selfie Addict
At the cinema at Ikeja Mall, I witnessed a girl take at least 5 pictures of herself at a go making the annoying duck face. I was already seething with anger as the guy next to me came with his family and yep, you guessed right, they started their picture sessions too!

SL Fabz, did you find this interesting? Are you guilty of doing any of the above in the cinema? What other annoying things do people do inside a cinema?

  • What I Caught On TV: Highlights From The 2015 Oscars

Last night was a historical one in Hollywood as some of the world’s finest actors and contributors to the movie industry were celebrated.

It’s always lovely to see great talents rewarded and I couldn’t help but follow the event keenly.

A big congratulations to everyone who picked up awards and all the nominees too. They are all winners.

British actor Eddie Redmayne won the best actor award for The Theory of Everything, while Julianne Moore picked up best actress for Still Alice. Dark comedy Birdman won best film and best director for Mexican film-maker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

Another highlight of the event was when John Legend and Common brought the house to tears with their rendition of best song winner “Glory,” from the film “Selma.” Images from the Selma-to-Montgomery march and of march leader Martin Luther King, Jr. played out behind them, as a growing chorus joined the stage. By the time the powerful performance was over, the audience was out of their seats applauding and “Selma” lead David Oyelowo had tears streaming down his face. It was indeed memorable to watch.

    Watch the video below:

And let’s not forget the fashion! There were some really stunning outfits on the red carpet. But the interesting thing about fashion is that its not only about wearing a great outfit, its also about how you carry yourself in it.

It was really hard to choose but here are my top 5 picks from the red carpet:

    Reese Witherspoon
    Reese Witherspoon
    Rosamund Pike
    Rosamund Pike
    Jennifer Lopez
    Jennifer Lopez
    Emma Stone
    Emma Stone
    Chrissy Teigen
    Chrissy Teigen

The good thing about awards such as this is that it reminds us that talent can be celebrated. There were some great winners last year, and this year, awesome winners too. Depending on the movie, the production team, the time and other factors, people shine at their own time so its important to give them a chance to become the best they can be.

What do you think about the award winners and the ceremony?

  • Congratulations to the Nigerian Who Won a Grammy!

Ever since I heard some songs from this group ‘Pentatonix‘, I fell in love with them. So imagine my excitement when I heard that the cute African American guy in the group is actually a Nigerian!

His name is Kevin Olusola and not only does he have an amazing voice, he can make some interesting sounds with his mouth and throat that blends so well with other members of the group.

At the recent Grammy Awards, Kevin picked up an award alongside his acapella band, Pentatonix taking home the award in the ‘Arrangement, Instrumental or Acappella’ category for their medley ‘Daft Punk’, a remake of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky”.

Even though he won it not as a Solo Artist but in a group, this is still a great feat. Congratulations! I am so proud of you.

Here are few interesting facts about Kevin:

kevin olusolaBorn in the United States to Nigerian father and Grenadian mother, Kelvin is a 26 year old beatboxer. He is a graduate of prestigious IVY League college, Yale University from where he graduated in 2011 with a degree in East Asian Studies. Kelvin is not just a musician, he’s super smart too. He also plays the cello, piano and saxophone. He also speaks fluent Chinese & Spanish.

I recall sharing a video of one of their Christmas songs last year. Check it out HERE. However, below is the song that won them the Grammy:

  • What I Caught On TV: SELMA, Martin Luther King’s Biopic

Ever since I heard that a powerful film was being made about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, I’ve been eagerly anticipating its release. I was even more eager when I heard a Nigerian David Oyelowo was playing the role of Dr. King.

Now, I’m glad I’d finally get a chance to see it soon as I hear it has been released in cinemas.

In 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. campaigned for equal voting rights, culminating in marches from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, Alabama, which ultimately led to President Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Now, the story of the civil rights marches that changed America is being told in a powerful new film produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt, starring David Oyelowo as Dr. King.

As a movie director and actress, I am very much aware of the how an audio-visual production with a deep message such as this can inspire change. This is one of the reasons why I focused so much energy on my movie ‘DRY’ which highlights the challenges faced by child brides and the devastating effects of Vesico Vaginal Fistula. DRY would also soon be premiered in Nigeria 🙂

Selma a story of how one dream can change the world and I can’t wait to see it.

    Here’s the trailer:

  • #MeetTheDRYStars: Liz Benson-Ameye & Rekiya Atta

I was privileged to have some seasoned actors with me for the production of DRY and I do not take this for granted in anyway. They brought their wealth of experience and skills to the set of the movie and made it such a pleasant experience.

It was a honour to work with two amazing women – Liz Benson-Ameye and Rekiya Atta.

Liz Benson-Ameye needs no introduction. Her journey to stardom began when she appeared on the set of the popular television soap opera, Fortunes in 1993 and since then, she has been a darling of the screen. She played the role of Matron in the movie, a woman who had so much passion for helping other women suffering from VVF. You could see her passion shine through the screen and watching her made me realize it wasn’t just acting, she is truly a good spirited woman.

You might not know Rekiaya Atta if you are only used to the ‘new Nollywood’, but she is one woman who was a great source of inspiration to my acting career. She was one of the early Nollywood actors bringing fond memories of films like Across The Niger, Battle of Love, Keeping Faith, Laraba, and Amina plus soap operas like, Behind the Clouds and Ripples. She aslo worked on the formative kiddies NTA television drama entitled ‘Tales by Moonlight’, I’m sure most of you would remember that.

Rekiaya played the role of Sani’s mother in the movie. Unlike Liz who was compassionate towards Halima who had VVF, she did the opposite and was harsh towards her. She is someone you’d definitely love to see in the movie so get ready to watch her on the big screen DRY premieres around you soon. You’d really love her professionalism.
