  • #Inspiration: This 88 year old man just graduated!

Horace Sheffield of Barnsville, Georgia just completed his lifelong goal to graduate from college. He did that last week Friday at 88 years old!

Sheffield went to Shorter University from 1960 to 1965, but he quit before graduating to help educate his daughters. 60 years later, he said it was time to get that degree. His determination was made fiercer when he realised he could achieve this goal for free, thanks to an article he read that senior citizens could go to college for free.

Now he is a graduate. His is happy and his family is proud of him.

There’s a lesson here, may be two:

    • Never give up on your dreams
    • Nothing should ever stop you from reaching your goals eventually
    • Don’t be limited by your age
    • Trust in God and give the best of you, always
    • Take advantage of all the opportunities available to you

Be inspired. Go make one of your lifelong ambitions come true. Right now!

    Congrats to Mr. Sheffield!

  • #SuperSunday: Showing Gratitude

We always think it is only those who have it all figure out that should show gratitude. First off, nobody has it all “figured out”; and also, it is actually those who lack a great deal that really should show gratitude.

    Why?

Because when you believe you don’t have enough, you want something greater than human assistance. Right? You need God to move in your favour. Especially if nothing else seems to be working. When you show gratitude for what you have, you allow for the doors of opportunity to open right before your eyes. The doors have been there all along, but your grumbling and ingratitude blind you.

So let us cultivate the habit of true gratitude.

Are you ready? Here are 10 ways you can show gratitude:

Tell the most unlikely person in your life how they have helped you discover self.

Cook and offer someone in your neighbourhood who needs the food more than you do.

Call someone you know who is going through a rough patch and lend them your ears. Just listen without judgments.

Volunteer to help at an orphanage home or help with sanitation at the community market near your home.

Cool your road rage; listen to music that heals your heart when you drive. Let the car beside drive into your lane if s/he wishes. It’s not the end of the world.

Share an inspirational story with someone- a story that changed your life.

Take a bottle of wine to your father/mother; spend the hour with him and gist about life. Only about things that make you both happy and trigger laughter.

Forgive those who have hurt you. Just let it go. Anger only damages.

Give genuine compliments to everyone you meet this week.

Tip the door man or the security man.

    *

If you want to receive, you have to give. Give of yourself with a genuine heart. May the universe respond to your deepest desires.

    Happy new week!

  • Talk To Steph: My fiancé slaps me, should I go ahead with the wedding?

    Dear Steph,

I am dating someone who is usually sweet and kind. But on the days he is upset, he roars with rage and gets physical. He has slapped me more than five times in a relationship of 18 months. He proposed two months ago, and we have fixed the date for October 2017.

Last week, it happened again. We were watching a series on TV, and we both disagreed with a particular scene. He argued his point and I argued mine, when he realized I was winning the argument, he gave me a heavy slap across my face, hitting my forehead on the sofa. My eyes still hurt from the pain.

I have complained to family, they say they’ll talk to him. My mother advised me not to argue with him again. Am I not going to speak at all or have an opinion in my own marriage?

I am excited about getting married finally, but I am worried.

I have tried to speak to him about it, but he keeps saying he is not like that and it will not happen again.

What should I do? I don’t want to marry an abusive man.

    ***

What do you think, should she marry her fiance regardless of the issue?

    Let’s hear your opinion, friends!

  • It’s World Malaria Day!

For Nigerians in the metropolis, malaria might seem like the ordinary condition that comes every once in a while to rattle our good health. But in many settlements across Africa, people die of malaria, mainly children.

In areas with high malaria concentration, pregnant women and children are most at risk of contracting the disease. Children under the age of 5 are more likely to die of the disease.

On World Malaria Day, the world raises awareness of the disease and its prevention.

For this year’s theme, the World Health Organisation says, “ending malaria for good”, by demonstrating prevention methods including mosquito nets and insecticides.

Here are 3 things you need to know:

If you are taking anti-malaria tablets, always finish the course. It will be ineffective if the instructions are not followed thoroughly.

Some malaria drugs are not effective because the parasites are resistant to them. If malaria is treated with the wrong drug, the disease will continue.

For many people, symptoms of malaria begin 10 days to 4 weeks after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

    Stay safe, all!

  • What’s in your bag? Essentials to last you all week

A new week requires new zest to life. How do you pump some enthusiasm into the week? It usually starts with the small things.

Here are 5 things you should carry around as you hop from one end of a busy day into another:

Lip gloss: You speak with your mouth, yes? Dry lips can be very exasperating. Put some luster on your lips, it changes your entire appearance.

Sunshades: Don’t mess with the sun! Protect your eyes. If you’ll be out and about all week, then your eyes deserve to be spared.

Hand sanitizer: We may have curbed Ebola, but sanitizers should remain an indispensable item in our lives. Imagine all the germs you encounter everyday…

Phone charger: How well can you function if your phone dies suddenly? Aha!!!

Earphones: Shut the noise out, feel your soul with the kind of message you desire. If there’s too much negativity out there, then create your own world. It’s so easy, earphones and the right kind of music or message can transport you to your desired destination.

    Just a friendly tip.

    Have a splendid new week.

  • From The Inside Out! 3 Reasons Why You Should Love Yourself Everyday

“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”
    – Lucille Ball

Whether or not you are capable of giving and receiving love starts with how much you have come to love yourself. Loving yourself should not be mistaken for narcissism or selfishness. It is about accepting and being comfortable with yourself, and above all embracing your uniqueness by not wishing you were someone else.

A popular old saying goes “You cannot love others if you do not love yourself.” This is a truth that should not be despised; you cannot give what you have not felt or experienced for yourself. Love starts with “Me”. It flows from within and only flourishes when is coming from a place of security and consistency.

Here are three reasons why you should be head over heels in love with “You”:

    1. You deserve to be loved: If you do not love yourself for who you are, you would find it very easy to believe that you do not deserve to be loved. If you are in a relationship, you begin to think everything that goes wrong is your fault and then you justify your partner if he/she is abusing you emotionally or physically. Loving yourself means you realizing that you deserve everything good – including someone who would love and respect you for who you are.

    2. When you love who you are, you accept who you are: Loving yourself is knowing yourself perfectly well. It is about being truthful about your positive and negative sides and choosing to focus on the positive side. This is not an excuse to stop improving yourself, but instead accepting your unique traits rather than comparing yourself to others.

    3. You are Confident and Live a Happy Life: When you love yourself, you are more confident about your body, your choices, your job and everything you can think about. It also means you live a life free of worries and endless comparisons with other people because you do not feel like you are missing out on a particular quality of life.

SL Fabz, the best approach to life is loving and leading every step of the way, and it all starts from the inside.

  • Fashionista On A Budget? 6 Ways To Keep You Looking Like A Million Bucks!

It is no longer news that Nigeria is in a recession and most times, it means is that people get to buy less for more. Not good at all, right?

One thing I am sure of is that, recession or not, Nigerians love to look good. You only need to go on Instagram to see the latest aso-ebi styles that are trending to confirm. If anything, our fashion industry is even growing faster than ever before. But I know that things are not always as they seem, and even when we want to look good, we have to be wise about spending.

So these are 5 tips to help you stay fashionable without breaking a bank:

    1. Look for Sales, Deals and Discounts:
At this period, you can’t afford any money going to waste. Keep your eyes on the look out for sales, deals and discounts. It’s a good thing that Easter is coming because many online shopping platforms offer their best deals during special periods like Mother’s Day, Black Friday, Christmas etc.

    2. Considering Selling or Trading Clothes You Don’t Wear: If you have nice things you don’t wear or use, consider selling them. That way, you make some extra cash to buy the clothes you really admire.

    3. Take a Friend along when Shopping: This is for those of use that have the tendency to overspend. Make sure you take a friend along that would keep you accountable. Be careful to ensure that this friend does not do the exact opposite (Lol!).

    4. Shop Off-Seasons: This may sound ironic, but a price surge usually happens when demand is greater than supply. So for example, a Red dress would be more expensive during Valentines season. Shopping off-seasons means you shop ahead of the season to avoid paying more due to high demand.

    5. Be Creative: Believe me, there are many creative ways to stay fashionable without poking holes in your pocket. Read fashion magazines, and try to recreate the styles there at a lesser cost. Repurpose your old clothes by bringing them to life with a little bit of DIY hacks. The good side to this is that you do not have to worry that someone else is wearing the same outfit as you.

    6. Shop Locally: This may be a good time to cut down on shopping at those international stores and ‘Buy Nigerian’ to keep costs lower.
